6 Day Sonoma and Napa Bike Tour
Day
One: Santa Rosa to Bodega Bay (35-40 miles). We will meet you at
your hotel in the morning and provide you with all the equipment and
information that you’ll need for your trip. You'll receive a custom
created trip package that will include maps, route descriptions and area
information. We'll take the time to review the route with you, give
personal tips and advice and answer any questions you may have. After
that you'll be traveling on your own, but we'll always be just a phone
call away. Your rooms will be reserved and your luggage transferred.
This ride takes you from downtown Santa Rosa across the valley and
through the Coastal Range to the town of Bodega Bay. The ride starts out
on a bike trail along the Santa Rosa Creek for the first 5 miles and is
all flat. You’ll make your way through the old apple country of the
Graton area while climbing gradually to the town of Occidental . In
Occidental you’ll take Coleman Valley Road to the Coast. This road
starts with a challenging 1.5 mile climb, but its well worth it!
You’ll
be riding one of the most spectacular roads anywhere in the world! There
are a few more sharp but not too long hills before you get to the ocean.
When you are standing on a bluff a few hundred feet above the crashing
waves you quickly forget them (you'll need to watch for cows on the road
along the ridge before you descend!). From there you have just a couple
of miles along the coast to Bodega Bay . You will spend the night in a
luxury hotel right on the coast.
Day
Two: Bodega Bay to Healdsburg (approximately 45 miles). Heading
north on Hwy. 1 to the mouth of the Russian River , you will be riding
along the classic Pacific coastline -- huge rocks and crashing waves
abound. Turning inland you'll follow the Russian River to the town of
Guerneville
where you can make a short side trip to the Armstrong Woods
Redwood Preserve (home to over 350 foot tall Redwoods!). From there you
have the classic choice -- over the mountain or around the mountain? If
you choose "over" you'll experience the steep narrow twisting Sweetwater
Springs Road . It winds through the Redwoods and swoops through the
canyon. If you go around, you will continue along the Russian River past Korbel "Champagne" Cellars and numerous wineries of the lower Russian
River appellation. Either way you will end up on the incredible Westside
Road that rolls north past organic farms, vineyards and wineries to the
wonderful town of Healdsburg . Here you can enjoy a stroll around the
old Spanish style plaza, dine in a fabulous restaurant and spend the
night at a luxury B & B right in town.
Day
Three: Healdsburg Loop (multiple distance options). Spend the day
exploring the Dry Creek Valley and surrounding areas. You'll have
options from a casual 25 mile winery tour to the challenge of climbing
to the Lake Sonoma Lookout. It's beautiful, it's pastoral, its bicycle
touring at its best. You'll spend another evening at your Healdsburg inn
and have to face the tough decision as to which restaurant you'll enjoy
that night (we'll offer suggestions!).
Day Four: Healdsburg to St. Helena (approximately 40 miles). Heading west from Healdsburg you'll cross the Alexander Valley passing the Jimtown Country Store and numerous wineries including Sausal, Alexander Valley and Fieldstone. The road then curves south and follows Mayacamas Creek and leads right into Knights Valley and then into the north end of the Napa Valley . After a moderate climb over a hill, you’ll cross into Napa Valley and head down to the town of Calistoga . You’re welcome to visit our friends at Vincent Arroyo's winery, see the world class art collection at Clos Pegas, watch the guys toast a barrel at the cooperage or do an olive oil tasting with homemade bread before you head down the Silverado Trail and then across the Valley to the town of St. Helena. You will spend the night at a wonderful inn near the heart of town, and dine at a fabulous restaurant. It's a charming small town known for its world class wines, natural beauty and wonderful food. Dinner will be at our favorite St. Helena restaurant (included). You lodging for the evening will be at a luxury inn right in St. Helena .
Day
5: You’ll head east across the Napa valley for a few miles before
very gradually climbing out to the east, past Lake Hennessey and into
the beautiful, quiet Pope Valley . Heading north you’ll experience a
wonderful part of rural California often overlooked by the tourists. Old
cattle ranches, remote vineyard sites and massive valley oaks decorate
the landscape. You’ll then climb back over the hills on the long (but
not too steep) Ink Grade before drop into Napa Valley on the wonderfully
slinky downhill of Howell Mountain Road . As you descend you may want to
stop to take in some of the most spectacular views of the Mayacamas
Mountains and Napa Valley that the area has to offer. More mostly level
valley miles bring you back to St. Helena . You’ll spend a second
evening at your St. Helena inn.
Day Six: Take a casual morning ride to explore the Southern part of Napa Valley or just relax at your inn before we transfer you back to Santa Rosa or a local car rental/shuttle stop.
