6 Day Sonoma and Napa Road Bike Tour
$2200 includes 6 nights lodging (Saturday-Friday) Saturday: Arrive in PM to lodging at Vineyard Creek Hyatt in Santa Rosa. Sunday: Santa Rosa to Bodega Bay- (40 miles) This ride takes you from downtown Santa Rosa across the valley and through the Coastal Range to the town of Bodega Bay. The ride starts out on a bike trail along the Santa Rosa Creek for the first 5 miles and is all flat. We'll then make our way through the old apple country of the Graton area while climbing gradually to the town of Occidental. In Occidental we'll take Coleman Valley Road to the Coast. This road starts with a challenging 1.5 mile climb, but it's well worth it! We'll be riding one of the most spectacular roads anywhere in the world! There are a few more sharp but not too long hills before you get to the ocean. When you are standing on a bluff a few hundred feet above the crashing waves you quickly forget them (you'll need to watch for cows on the road along the ridge before you descend!). From there you have just a couple of miles along the coast to Bodega Bay. Approximate climbing 2500ft. Monday: Bodega Bay to Healdsburg. (45 miles) Heading north on Hwy 1 to the mouth of the Russian River, you will be riding along the classic Pacific coastline- huge rocks and crashing waves abound. Turning inland you'll follow the Russian River to the town of Guerneville where you can make a short side trip to the Armstrong Woods Redwood Preserve (home to over 350 foot tall Redwoods!). From there you have the classic choice- over the mountain or around the mountain? If you choose "over" you'll experience the steep narrow twisting Sweetwater Springs Road. It winds through the Redwoods and swoops through the canyon. If you go around, you will continue along the Russian River past Korbel "Champagne" Cellars and numerous wineries of the lower Russian River appellation. Either way you will end up on the incredible Westside Road that rolls north past organic farms, vineyards and wineries to the wonderful town of Healdsburg. Here you can enjoy a stroll around the old Spanish style plaza, dine in a fabulous restaurant and spend the night at a luxury B & B right in town. Tuesday: Healdsburg Loop (multiple distance options). Spend the day exploring the Dry Creek Valley and surrounding areas. You'll have options from a casual 25 mile winery tour to the challenge of climbing to the Lake Sonoma Lookout. It's beautiful, it's pastoral, it's bicycle touring at it's best. You'll spend another evening at your Healdsburg inn and have to face the tough decision as to which restaurant you'll enjoy that night (we'll offer suggestions!). Wednesday: Healdsburg to St. Helena (ride distance 40 miles). Heading west from Healdsburg you'll cross the Alexander Valley passing the Jimtown Country Store and numerous wineries including Sausal, Alexander Valley and Fieldstone. The road then curves south and follows the Mayacamas Creek and leads right into Knights Valley and then into the north end of the Napa Valley. A moderate climb over the hill; cross the Napa Valley line and head down to the town of St. Helena. It's a charming small town known for its world class wines, natural beauty and wonderful food. Dinner will be at our favorite St. Helena Restaurant (included). Lodging at the Vineyard Country Inn in St. Helena. Thursday: Pope Valley Loop- An amazing ride out of Napa Valley to the east. This is a truly beautiful 40 mile ride with very little traffic through Pope Valley. The return has a long (3-4 mile) but not very steep climb up the Ink Grade to get back to Napa, but the views make it worth the work! You will remain at the Vineyard Country Inn for another night. Friday: Napa South- Take a relaxing morning ride down the Silverado Trail or a quick climb into the hills before we depart at 11:00 am for your shuttle back to Santa Rosa/car rental or airport shuttle. Tour price is $2200 per person based on double occupancy ($650 single supplement applies) 6 nights lodging (Saturday in Santa Rosa thru Thursday in St. Helena) 4 dinners, 5 lunches, 5 breakfasts Experienced local guides and support vehicles. Fully equipped Trek hybrid rental bike with helmet, cycle computer, lock, etc. Wine tasting daily, entry to all special events hosted by or for us during the tour. All transfers during the tour and from the finish point to downtown San Francisco or SFO Airport. Does not include airfare, transportation to Santa Rosa for start, optional spa treatments, incidentals or guide gratuities.
