Geysers Loop:
Approx. 65 miles
Approx. 4600 ft of climbing
Recommended for fit and experienced riders only.
This ride heads north from Healdsburg through the Dry Creek Valley, over the hill at Dutcher Crossing and into the Alexander Valley. At the northeast corner of the Alexander Valley you find the narrow lightly traveled Geysers road which takes you east following Big Sulfur Creek through a narrow canyon into the Mayacama Mountains. After about 9 miles of gradual climbing the road turns away from the river, past the old Geysers Resort Road and climbs steeply to the shoulder of Geyser Peak at 2650 feet. You continue south wrapping around the ridge, passing the old quick silver town of Mercuryville, before swooping down on a quick decent to the bridge over Little Sulfur Creek. The final 300+ foot climb out of the gulch brings you to the ridge above Alexander Valley and spectacular views of Northern Sonoma County from the Coastal Range through Knights Valley to Mount St. Helena. The descent is a long twisting and spectacular dive from the rugged cattle ranches in mountains to the beautifully groomed vineyards of the valley. Another 10 miles of flat cruising to flush out your legs and you’re back in Healdsburg again.
Special Notes for this ride:
Geysers Road is narrow and in sections one lane and road conditions are poor with gravel and rocks in the road. Pavement is cracked and separated in many places due to regular seismic activity in the area. The traffic level is low, but there can be cars!
Significant portions of this route are remote and have no cell phone coverage.
There are no services or water available on Geysers Road.
Micro climate in the Geysers area can be hotter than the surrounding valleys in the summer. Bring extra water!
Traffic on Alexander Valley Road can be heavy and the road is narrow. Use caution.
